Oracular SpectacularBy: MgmtReviewed by: amg bensberg
Greatest Indie record ever!An energetic mix of special music Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the only band members of MGMT, triumphed with their debut album “Oracular Spectacular”. In 2002, both musicians met and recognised that they had the same taste in music. Soon they played in small locations, with success! The public appearances caused more and more enthusiastic fans, VanWyngarden and Goldwasser became popular with the time. Then, in 2008, a manager was convinced that these two guys had the voice and creativity to entertain the whole world. The album called “Oracular Spectacular” followed soon. Their greatest songs were “Kids” and “Time To Pretend”. People who heard them were directly delighted. They overheard the failures of the album like “The Handshake”.
The song “Time To Pretend” is the most famous track and it puts you into a good mood. When I listen to “Time To Pretend” I feel fine and relaxed. Moreover, the lyrics are very thought-provoking, because they are about doing something new and crazy. The song also has got a calming rhythm, and when you want to forget the blue, daily-life for a short time, you should listen to “Time To Pretend”.
“Kids” is one of the best songs of the album and is also very well-known. It has a special style and fits perfectly to the other tracks. After listening to it a few times, you can recognise the real sense of the song. It deals with people who forget their childhood and don’t think about their family. I think the message is: Don’t be so ungrateful to your parents because you have forgotten all the things your parents did for you.
One of my favourite tracks from the album is “Of Moons, Birds & Monsters”. It is a melodic song and whenever I hear it I just have to relax (and sometimes to sing). The lyrics say that you shouldn’t wait for wonders, but when I first listened to the song I couldn’t understand them. Like the rest of the album this track belongs to the Indie-Electronic genre and you just have to like it or not.
Then you hit the track “The Handshake” which (I think) is the weakest song of the whole album, because it isn’t something special and it soon gets boring. The melody is rather slow and quiet. It deals with people who are rich but aren’t happy, which I think is a good message. But sadly, the lyrics are hard to understand and the music is a bit boring so that you don’t recognise the message.
All in all, I would recommend this album to all Indie-Electronic fans because there is no really bad song in the whole album and the arrangement is brilliant. I think “Oracular Spectacular” is the world’s best produced album of all Indie-Electronic bands.
